Lately I have been reminiscing on some memories and one in particular really stood out to me; my 21st birthday. That day was truly special for me in so many ways. Let’s recap and relive this day today, for the sake of this blog post!
On this specific day I had woken up to tons of messages from friends and family wishing me a happy birthday. One of those messages was from one of my cousins. What stands out to me now – while I am reminiscing – is the fact that at the end of her message she said, “see you soon!” At the time I didn’t think much of it, as I knew I wasn’t going to have anyone over and I had no plans of doing anything. It was just going to be a regular day.
As I said before, today was just another day and I had no plans on celebrating my birthday. The timing of it for the past few years fell during a time where it made it inconvenient (Ramadhan) so I never really did much. In all honesty, I never desired elaborate birthday celebrations anyways.
Little did I know, a surprise birthday party was in the works!
Throughout the day I relaxed and made the day as productive as I could. Before iftar time (the time we break our fast to finally eat), my mom, sister and I all helped with the making of the food for iftar. During this time I felt myself getting hungry as the smell of all the food wafted throughout the entire house. Just a few more hours and I would be able to indulge myself in the mouth watering goodness!
An hour or two before Iftar time, someone had rang the bell. In our house we use the basement kitchen to cook, so when the doorbell rings, we have to run upstairs to get it. I remember sending my sister up to open the door as I was currently playing a game on my phone (Cooking Dash to be exact! All my friends know how addicted I am to this game…) But anyways, my sister quickly came down to tell me that “there’s a man at the door…you talk to him.” Without thinking too much about it, I paused my game and ran upstairs to greet this “man.”
To my surprise, there was no “man” at the door, just a bunch of friends and family screaming “happy birthday!” while holding gifts and a cake!
I was SO shocked to see my friends and family at the door. I have come to realize that I am the PERFECT person to surprise because I always disregard hints and clues and my reactions are always the greatest. My reaction was priceless as I burst into tears right after seeing everyone at my door and a huge Kitty cake in my cousins hand. I completely lost all control of my emotions as it was the sweetest thing seeing the people I love and care about at my door on my birthday. After I hugged each and every one of them, I recomposed myself, went to change into fancier clothes and headed downstairs to join them.
As we sat around the table we started talking about how they all planned the birthday surprise. Since my birthday is during the summer, we would go to the track near my house to jog and it was during that time the idea came about. It turned out that my sister and my cousins had asked my mom if they could plan a surprise birthday party for me at my place. My mother of course said yes. In all honesty, I was surprised that she didn’t spill the beans!
About a month before my birthday I was at a grocery store where I was looking at a cake book with my sister. In that book I came across a page with a Kitty cake and I immediately was thinking to myself how awesome it would be to have that as a birthday cake. My sister saw me gawking at it so I told her that she should make it for me. She took a picture of it and said “we’ll see.”
I have a cousin who is super talented at many things, one of them being baking and making cakes. Little did I know was that she was going to make one for me! The back story on the cake is that my sister mentioned to my cousin that I wanted a Kitty cake and sent her the picture of the one from the book. She then attempted (and succeeded might I add) with my cake. The day of my birthday the cake started to melt and droop because of the many layers. This made the cake quite heavy too and difficult to work with!
The picture below is my beautiful and delicious cake! A lot of hard work went into making this cake and I couldn’t be more thankful for the time and effort it took. P.s. If you haven’t figured it out by now, I LOVE cats! Call me a crazy cat lady all you want, but I’ve come to terms with my obsession!
The rest of the evening consisted of opening presents, eating cake, and enjoying each other’s company. I am a very lucky girl to have the best family and friends out there.
Looking back on it now, there were a lot of foreshadowing moments that I was completely oblivious to. I think because of the fact that I had it in my mind that this year there were going to be no celebrations, made it that much easier for my mind to disregard any clues. Either way I was very happy and shocked with my reaction as were my family and friends.
I am truly blessed to have the greatest family and friends who love and cherish me. For without them, life would be pretty dull. Alhumdulillah.
P.s. I feel SUPER OLD! Life is just ticking by and I still don’t have my life together. I always say, every birthday is a year closer to death and every passing day a little piece of you perishes. I didn’t mean to end on a negative note but it’s a given fact. Don’t forget the ultimate goal here.
